Pentarab built the DeskEcho app as a free app with an optional non-consumable one-time in-app purchase (DeskEcho Pro) that unlocks additional clock faces and styles. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, what is shared via Apple iCloud, and how your privacy is protected.
Privacy First Approach
DeskEcho stores none of your content on a Pentarab server. The app uses Apple's CloudKit Public Database to anonymously share short mood tags between users. Your Apple ID is not exposed to Pentarab or to other users — CloudKit handles all identity and access on your behalf. To improve the app, DeskEcho sends pseudonymous usage events to an analytics service Pentarab runs itself, as described in the Analytics section below.
Mood Tags & CloudKit Public Database
When you publish a mood tag (for example, a short word or emoji about how the workday feels), the tag is sent to the CloudKit Public Database under your iCloud account and becomes visible to other DeskEcho users in anonymized form. Specifically:
- Only the mood tag itself, a coarse time bucket, and an optional region category are stored in the public database.
- No real name, email, phone number, precise location, or Apple ID is attached to the tag.
- Pentarab cannot link any tag back to a specific user; only Apple can, under its own privacy policy.
- Do not include personal, confidential, or identifying information in mood tags.
You can delete tags you published from within the app at any time, which removes them from the CloudKit Public Database.
Information Stored Locally
The app stores the following information locally on your device:
- Your draft and published mood tags
- Desk Mode appearance and time-theme preferences
- Widget and Lock Screen configuration
- In-app purchase entitlements and settings
All locally stored data is removed when you uninstall the app.
In-App Purchases & Billing
Additional clock faces and styles are unlocked through a non-consumable one-time in-app purchase (DeskEcho Pro) offered via the Apple App Store. There are no subscriptions. All payments and billing are processed by Apple — Pentarab does not receive or store your payment card details, Apple ID, or billing address.
To validate your purchase, the app communicates with Apple's StoreKit and may use Apple's receipt verification services. We may receive an anonymous transaction identifier from Apple solely to confirm entitlement; this identifier is not linked to your personal identity.
Analytics
To understand how the app is used and to improve it, DeskEcho sends usage events to an analytics service that Pentarab runs itself. It is not Google Analytics, and the data is not passed on to any third party. The events record which screens you open and which features you use, together with an install identifier — a random value the app generates on first launch. It is not derived from your device and is not an advertising identifier; reinstalling the app produces a new one.
This data is not used to track you across other companies' apps or websites, is not linked to your personal identity, and is not shared with data brokers. DeskEcho does not collect the Advertising Identifier (IDFA), so no tracking prompt is shown. The events are received by a Pentarab server, which records the country from the connection itself — the app never sends it, and it is country-level only. Your IP address is not stored.
Third-Party Services
DeskEcho sends pseudonymous usage analytics to a Pentarab-run service (described above) and does not use advertising services or share data with data brokers. For mood tag sharing the app talks to Apple iCloud (CloudKit), and purchases are handled by Apple's StoreKit — both governed by Apple's own privacy policy.
Your Data Control
You have meaningful control over your data:
- You can delete individual mood tags you published from within the app.
- You can disable mood tag sharing entirely and use DeskEcho as a local-only ambient display.
- You can revoke iCloud access for DeskEcho in iOS Settings → Apple ID → iCloud.
- Uninstalling the app removes all local data permanently.
Security
Mood tag transport and storage are handled by Apple CloudKit, which is encrypted in transit and at rest. Local data security depends on your device. We recommend:
- Keeping your device password-protected
- Using iOS security features like Face ID or Touch ID
- Keeping your iOS updated with the latest security patches
Children's Privacy
DeskEcho is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, please contact us so we can address it.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
